ARTIST FOCUS: CHRIS PETERSEN
Our artist focus series kicks off 2014 with a great interview with Chris Petersen who runs a little shop everyone knows as “The Geekerie”. Chris creates excellent artwork of all sorts and in such a wide variety that there’s something for every geek to love. His interview begins below…
Tell us about yourself. Where are you from?
I’m a Yankee, born in Boston and am currently living a quiet life in the capitol city of South Carolina.
What is your day job? What
By day, I’m a graphic designer and corporate shill for a company which caters to the aerospace and medical industries. In my spare time, I run a design business specializing in print artwork for geeks.
How long have you been designing/illustrating? What’s your “origin story”?
I’ve been an ‘artist’ since I was in elementary school. I really developed an interest and talent in design while I was studying to be a computer programmer. This was the great irony of my life; the belief that the pursuit of art would free me from the shackles of my PC. I was half right, I use an iMac now.
Who/what influences your art? Is there a particular person’s style that has influenced you?
I’m influenced by typography as illustration and strong, simple design like that of most Pop and Mid-century artists. While I don’t create works in his style, Pollock was my first and always favorite artist. I like the controversy his work inspires. Is it art? Is it just a bunch of splattered paint? Is it raw, frenetic emotion on canvas? I like ambiguity in art.
What medium do you typically use when creating your art?
I’m strictly digital, kids!
What does being a “geek” mean to you?
For me, geek used to mean that you can be a fan of fantasy movies or comics as long as you kept it to yourself. I had no concept of cons or fandom or that there were other people out there who went through three VHS tapes of the Fifth Element. Today, geek means acceptance and wonder. To me, it is the collective joy of inspiration, imagination, and exploration.
How do you tackle a new project? What’s your process?
I like to let things evolve in real-time. I don’t generally approach a project with sketches or research. I like having freedom in the moment when I design.
What is the best art advice you have ever received?
The world is vast. There will always be someone to appreciate your art no matter how abstract or unique your vision. You don’t have to fear ambiguity.
What do you like to do for relaxation/fun?
I really try to continue my education in all things design, culture, and geek. In my spare time you will likely find me streaming whole series’ of Classic Who, or reading Simon Pegg’s autobiography. I also just got Star Trek Catan as a gift, so watch your back Klingons.
Are you playing any video games currently?
Even with diminished free time, I managed to beat Ni No Kuni and Pokemon XY. I’m currently playing A Link Between Worlds, Final Fantasy XIV: ARR, and Batman: Arkham Asylum.
If you could be any video game character who would it be and why?
Superficially, I would like to be the main character in a Pokemon game. People just give you valuable items and rare Pokemon all the time. You get tame and train some badass wild animals to fight for/protect you. Not to mention the huge sums of money people throw at you after you’ve devastated their lineup. You actually lead a very cruel, greedy life in those games. So, maybe I’d be Link.
Do you have a favorite video game series?
Final Fantasy is my tip-top, all-time favorite series. I have played every numbered sequel to or near completion.
If you could be any dinosaur with any super power, what would you choose?
I would be a Tyrannosaurus with stretch powers. I feel like I would have all my bases covered at that point. Then mouthy triceratopses wouldn’t tease me in poorly-marketed CG films.
